September, 2011 – Indian Navy commissions new stealth frigate

INS Satpura stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, was commissioned last weekend by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma. She is the second of the indigenous Shivalik (Project 17) Class of stealth frigates with the third ship, INS Sahyadri,presently in the final stages of construction at Mazgaon Docks Ltd, India. Firstof the Class, INS Shivalik, was commissioned in April last year. Seven ships of the follow on Project 17A Class of a modified design were approved in July 2009.to be built by Mazagon and Garden Reach shipyards. This class of modern warship will significantly strengthen the fleet capabilities and increase the aspirations of the Indian Navy’s status as a blue water navy.
